While most of us are probably used to gaming on the computer with the mouse and keyboard or on the console with the gamepad, plumb Google with his Project GameFace pushes the limits of usability.
Everything revolved around the subject of artificial intelligence at the Google I/O developer fair. Exciting projects such as Google Bard were shown, while Project GameFace was presented via its own video.
Project GameFace: This is how Google wants to enable gambling with the face
Google’s Project GameFace is by no means intended as a mere pastime for developers. On the contrary: one wants to help people who suffer from limitations in operating a computer and enable them to enjoy playing video games in the same way.
As a well-known face, the search engine giant got the streamer Lance Carr on board. He suffers from muscular dystrophy, so he uses a head-tracking mouse to play. Inspired by Carr, Google wants to go one step further and in future offer AI-supported software that only needs a webcam to capture head and face movements.
With almost 500 possible points that the tool is able to recognize, the detection should be able to react very precisely. Different facial movements represent different inputs, which are then transmitted to the computer. The individual commands can be adjusted as desired, so the user can decide which movement represents which input.
Google’s Project GameFace, as the name might already suggest, is currently a prototype that is still being developed. However, to ensure that this progresses as quickly as possible, the code is made available to developers and potential users as open source. Speaking of face controls: With Before Your Eyes there is currently a PSVR2 titlewhich also uses your head and eyes to navigate.
