When in 2019 Blizzard Entertainment announced Overwatch 2 we were told that the first-person shooter could count on a story mode, the so-called Hero Mode. Now the Irvine studio lets it be known that such standalone PvE mode has been cancelled.
The decision was made to encourage the development of content in the live service mode, therefore the competitive multiplayer of Overwatch 2, as specified by game director Aaron Keller. βLast year we decided to shift all of our resources towards multiplayer and the new story arc that kicks off with Season 6,β Keller told The Notebooks. GameSpot. βAs the team increasingly realized what it would take to create Story Mode, as they figured out how long it would take, the iterations, the technology required, it became clear that it wasn’t going to work with scheduling the content.β
However, Blizzard has some co-op missions in store which will expand the narrative sector of Overwatch 2. These will be made available during Season 6, at the end of the summer.
