A test will be carried out this coming weekend with a new setup for sprint races. For example, the second free practice session will be canceled to make way for an extra qualifying session, which is only for the sprint race. Moreover, that short race will only score points and not determine the starting grid for Sunday.
Max Verstappen has previously stated that he is not a fan of changes to the race weekend, just as he is not a fan of the ‘original’ format of the sprint races. The reigning world champion has even said that he may leave if the formula of Formula 1 continues to be tinkered with.
According to Ralf Schumacher, it is an empty threat, the analyst told Sky Sports Germany.
“The past, present and future have shown and will show that Formula 1 is much bigger than one individual. Bernie Ecclestone is also gone and without him F1 wouldn’t exist, yet the sport is more successful than ever. Verstappen should pack his bags and leave or just accept it as it is. He is paid to participate. He won’t kill F1 as much as I like him.”
Schumacher understands criticism
Schumacher is not the first to criticize Verstappen about his statements. Earlier, F1 world champion Damon Hill already made a similar contribution. Still, both Sky Sports analysts agree that Verstappen does have a point with his criticism.
Less driver training is a disadvantage for young drivers, who can use all the time on a circuit to get to know the track. Not all F1 circuits are part of the feeder series and especially on street circuits, such as Baku, a catastrophic mistake can easily be made.
