Square Enix has had great success in recent years with its so-called HD-2D graphics style, which the developer has used in Triangle Strategy and Octopath Traveler, among others.
The style has caught the interest of a designer who calls herself “dott” on YouTube. Among other things, the designer has considered how other games could look in the HD-2D style, such as the original Pokémon games.
This is what Pokémon Red could look like in HD-2D style.
The thought project has resulted in several videos where “dott” takes us through various parts of the well-known Kanto world. At the top of the article, you can see a tour through Pallet Town, where the adventure begins.
The video to the right of the article is set in Vermillion City, the town of Lt. Surge and his electric monsters.
As “dott” explains, the videos are stitched together in Unreal Engine 5. The designer has also tried his hand at similar videos based on Chrono Trigger and Terranigma, which you can see on “dott’s” YouTube channel.
