After having fulfilled the dream of Valheim fans by adding two highly requested modes, the Iron Gate studios write an open letter to all fans to warn them of the risks they could run by accessing the servers of those who use paid mods.
The Swedish software house regains the Steam pages to be firmly against paid mods: “First of all, even if we don’t have any official support for mods, we are very happy to see that people are interested in our game and create own mods, but that essentially means that installation of any modders creation is done at your own risk“.
The Iron Gate Studies also point out that “we do not look favorably on whose actions block access to mods behind a paywall. We believe that charging money for a mod goes against the creative and open spirit of modding itself, and therefore we encourage all mod developers to make them freely available to anyone who wants to play them. For enthusiasts who wish to show their appreciation for a modder’s work, we recommend that you support it with a voluntary donationHowever, we don’t want payment to be a mandatory requirement to access it”.
Finally, the Swedish developers explain that “sometimes joining a dedicated server can automatically activate the download of a mod and for this we want to avoid any kind of misunderstanding. Valheim already has a specific function, you can use it to activate a popup that notifies those who enter a dedicated server that the game is running with a mod”.
